In the
centre of Bilbao, is found the “backbone”
of Bilbao commerce. There can be found all types of
modern shops, department stores and international companies
contributing to the modernity of this municipality.
With 2,000 commercial companies covering 221,000m2 of
business area, they make Bilbao the commercial centre
of the Atlantic Axis and a model of economic and urban
renewal.
A modern urban transport system is responsible for
communicating these areas with the rest of the city
and Biscay. Additionally, there is a wide range of
8,000 parking spaces, divided between controlled parking
and private rotation zones. The metro,
which runs right along this axis (San Mamés,
Indautxu, Moyúa, Abando); the Uribitarte and
Abandoibarra tram; the RENFE train
service that stops at the Circular Square; and the
buses of Bilbobus and Bizkaibus, all carry the visitor
to the commercial centre of Bilbao, where pedestrian
streets make walking and shopping a pleasant experience.
As it is the shopping destination for tourists, for
visitors from other Biscay localities, for neighbours
from other Bilbao districts, as well as its own inhabitants,
this area of the city constitutes the engine of development
of the service sector and the heart of the
commercial investment of Bilbao.
